NORMAJEAN GROENEWOLD, age 87, of Rushmore, went to her eternal life on February 16, 2016, when her Lord God called her home. She died at Crossroads Care Center in Worthington, MN. She was born June 27, 1928, in Laurens, IA, to Lyman and Arlene (Burroughs) George. Norma graduated from Rolfe High School, in Rolfe, IA, in 1947. She attended Cedar Falls College where she graduated with a teaching certificate for grades K-8. She taught in a one room school house in Pocahontas County, IA.

Norma married Conrad Halverson in 1948. The couple lived in Rolfe, IA. In 1951, they moved to Beloit, WI where Norma worked at Fairbanks-Morris. The couple later divorced; and Norma moved to Adrian in 1968.

Norma married Herman J. Groenewold on August 28, 1971. The couple lived and farmed west of Bigelow. Herman died in 1997. Norma moved to Rushmore in 2000.

She was a member and an Ordained Elder and Deacon of the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore. During her life Norma taught Sunday School and Confirmation classes for 52 years. God gifted Norma with a beautiful soprano voice and she sang at churches and other celebrations. She was known for her solo work, especially at Christmas time when she was frequently requested to sing “O Holy Night.”

She enjoyed spending time with her family especially with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was a collector of bells, angels and tea cup and saucer sets. She lived her faith which sustained her during the tough times and the good time through her life. Her sense of humor, independent spirit and love of family and friends will be greatly missed.

Norma is survived by her son, Randy (Pat) Halverson, Fairview, SD; daughter, Barbara Freimuth, Worthington, 13 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; two daughters-in-law, Kathleen Halverson, Monticello, IN; and Wanda Halverson, West Point, NE; and a sister, Bertha Wiseman, Mt. Pleasant, IA.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Herman; daughter, Connie Halverson, in 1973; two sons, Lyman Halverson, in 1992; and Ronald (Scooter) Halverson, in 2007; and a granddaughter,Michelle (Halverson) Lasley, in 2011; brother William George; and sisters, Ada Colee, Lorene Gustafson, and Marge Simonson.

Visitation will be from 2-4 pm Sunday at the Dingmann Funeral Home in Worthington; and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Funeral will be 10:30 am Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Rushmore. Burial will be in the Sunset Rest Cemetery in Rushmore.
