Professor Joseph Carl Daniel

Joseph Carl Daniel
Born in Murphysboro, Illinois
Departed on Feb. 15, 2016 and resided in Norfolk, VA.

Professor Joseph Carl Daniel passed away peacefully at his Norfolk home on February 15th with his family by his side. Joseph was born and raised in Murphysboro, Illinois where he worked as a young man for the family-owned Daniel Grocery Company. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and studied biology at St. Louis University. He earned a Master of Ecology at the University of Michigan and a Doctorate of Biology at the University of Colorado. His first faculty position was at Adam's State College where, he used to joke, he "was the Biology Department."
Joseph helped create the Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biology Department at the University of Colorado and was the Chairman of the Department of Biology at the University of Tennessee. He worked with two future Nobel Laureates, first at the University of Cambridge in England and again as a Fulbright Scholar in Nairobi, Kenya. He retired as Dean of Sciences at Old Dominion University. Joseph made significant contributions to the field of Reproductive Endocrinology and was honored for his work by the National Institutes of Health.
Joseph was married for 63 years to the love of his life, Mary Hurley Daniel, who predeceased him. Together they raised six children. He loved to travel, visiting numerous countries on every continent, except Antarctica, a trip he was still considering up until his death. In retirement, he especially loved working as a dog trainer and handler with Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
Joseph was also an accomplished writer and storyteller. He penned a detailed and often humorous memoir his family cherishes. Many may know him in Norfolk as the author of the children's book series, "Charles the Lion Dog".
His children will remember him as an energetic man, rich in humor, full of curiosity and adventure, with an aversion to losing at Yahtzee.
He leaves behind his children, Catherine Johnson of Washington D.C., and David Johnson of San Jose, California, Joseph (Wendy) Daniel of Boulder, Colorado, Mark (Lisa Kingsley) Daniel of Norfolk, Judith (Scott) Kinzy of Knoxville, Tennessee, Edward (Karen) Daniel of Conyers, Georgia and Alice (Benjamin Boone) Daniel of Fresno, California, his sister, Dorothy Merriam of Plymouth, Minnesota, his brother, Richard (Cindy) Daniel of Apollo Beach, Florida, and his grandchildren Elizabeth (Konstantin) Davydov, Benjamin Johnson, Hollis (Calum Waddell) and Penn Daniel, Kelsey and Corinne Kinzy, Kathryn and Melissa Daniel, Atticus and Asher Boone and many nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial celebration at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts. Norfolk Chapel on Thursday Feb. 18th at 6 p.m. The family asks in lieu of flowers that donations be made to Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Online condolences may be offered to the family through hdoliver.com.
