Sims married Susan Amelia Foster (c. 1838 - 9/17/1916) of Columbus, Ohio on 7/27/1859 performed by Rev. S. S. Guillard in the Greenville District. Susan was the daughter of Abiel and Pamelia Foster.
His brothers were Thomas Jefferson Clary (C.S.A.) and John Williamson Clary, who was baptized at Smyrna Church on 11/15/1846; and sisters were Jane Caroline Clary, baptized at Smyrna on 11/7/1844, who married (?) Lewis Southern of Greenville District, and Sarah Clary, who was a minor in 1867. Sims Francis was also baptized at Smyrna Church on 7/23/1837.
Sims enlisted in the Confederate Army, the 16th Infantry, in December, 1861 at Camp Hamilton (Hampton) in Greenville County for a period of 12 months. He is shown on a muster roles for July/August 1862 as a Corporal when he was transferred, traded for a sharp-shooter, to Company F of the First Regiment of the South Carolina Volunteers (Bratton's Brigade – Field's Division – Longstreet's 1st Corps) on July 17, 1862. He was elected Lieutenant on January 24, 1862. On the July/August 1864 muster, he is listed as "sick at hospital." On Medical Director's Office Report of July, 1864, Sims is shown at General Hospital #4 with "chronic diarrhea and debility." He remained on sick leave for the duration of the War, and is listed in the Parole of Prisoners of War at Appomattox.
Sims Francis and Susan joined the First Presbyterian Church of Greenville on February 23, 1873.
Sims and Susan had five children, they were:
1. Helen Elizabeth Clary (10 Jun 1860 – 22 Mar 1928) who married Frank C. Green of Greenwood, S.C.
2. Frances Amelia "Fannie" Clary (8 Mar 1862 – 6 Feb 1948) who married Arthur Middleton (18 Feb 1854- 26 Jan 1912) of Greenwood and Charleston on 15 Dec 1885. Arthur was the son of Arthur Middleton, Esq. (1833 - ) and Julia Emma Rhett of Charleston and Idlewild, Ga., who were married on 23 Jan 1853.
3. Harriett Catherine Clary (26 Apr 1866 – 26 Nov 1939) who married Franz Engles (19 Jul 1875 – 22 Dec 1916) of Greenwood on 8/15/1891. He became the secretary of the Ennoree Cotton Mill in Spartanburg.
4. James Edward Clary (11 Nov 1869 – 30 Nov 1948) married Mary Elizabeth "Azile" Wilson (21 May 1881 – 2 Jan 1915) on 11/12/1901. Azile was the daughter of John Jamison Wilson (11 Feb 1855 – 20 Nov 1899) and Florence Toccoa Irby (30 Sep 1851 – 22 Jan 1915). James Edward Clary is buried in Monroe, N.C.
5. Caroline Augusta "Carrie" Clary (11 Jul 1871 – 18 May 1948) married Charles Blake Alexander (11 Jun 1866 – 30 Sep 1934) on 17 Apr 1890 in Abbeville, SC.
