Columbia, SC - Jane Hoffman Cooper Mitchell, 76, of Columbia, SC passed away peacefully on February 17, 2016, surrounded by her family after a courageous battle. Born in Camden South Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Ames Houston Cooper and the late Betty Jane Hoffman Cooper.
She was a graduate of Camden High School and Agnes Scott College (‘61). She earned a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology from the University of South Carolina, attained her Master’s plus 30, and was accepted as a doctoral candidate at the University of South Carolina. Jane taught hundreds of students beginning in Richmond, Virginia, continuing in Columbia, SC followed by a short time in Augusta, Georgia and finally returning to Columbia. In Columbia, Jane taught at Saint Andrews Elementary and Saint Joseph’s Catholic School, completing her teaching career with over 20 years dedicated to the students at Crayton Middle School. Jane loved to learn, and loved to teach. She adored each and every student and was dedicated to ensuring their love of many subjects, especially math. She retired after many years of teaching MEGGS. During her career and after, family and friends could not be out with Jane without running into former students whose names she always remembered. Jane was a longtime member of Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Columbia Garden Club, Daughters of the American Revolution, Bookmark Book Club and Forest Lake Country Club. She was an avid golfer, former water safety instructor, a voracious reader of any subject, an excellent bridge player and an expert entertainer. Jane was happiest entertaining friends and family, whether in the home or a simple lunch out. Loving to all creatures, Jane especially found joy with her longtime furry companion Spooky.
In addition to her parents, Jane was predeceased by her best friend and love of her life, Monte W. Hartsell. She is survived by her daughter, Elizabeth “Betsy” Mitchell Meares; and sons, Wylie Edward “Ted” Mitchell, III (Tracy) and John Kirby Mitchell (Alison); grandchildren, Guy Maurice Meares IV, William Cooper Meares, Andrew Pearson Mitchell, Ryan Patrick Mitchell and Lauren Claire Mitchell; sister, Mary Ames “Amy” Cooper Dean (Howard); nephews, Christopher Evan Dean and Kevin Michael Dean; and niece, Melissa Erin Dean.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 7 PM on Saturday, February 20, 2016 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Devine Street Chapel. A graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery will be private. Honorary pallbearers will be Jane's longtime friends and bridge group, Hope Spillane, Pat James, Patty Brooks, Tussy Crombo, Nancy Godbold, Maxie Uhl, Cornelia McGhee and Ann Richardson.
