Former Modoc County Sheriff Lynn Edward Harris passed away peacefully at his home on Feb. 13, 2016.

Lynn was born to Sydney and June Harris on Aug. 17, 1924, in Cedarville, Calif. In his early years, he was raised in Ft. Bidwell, Calif., where as a young boy he helped his father with milking their cows and then delivering milk in his wagon to people in Ft. Bidwell. They also sold milk to the creamery in Cedarville.

Lynn graduated from Surprise Valley High School in 1942. He enlisted in the Army and served overseas during World War II and was transported with the troops aboard the Queen Elizabeth to Europe. He was in the military police and assigned a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. He served in England and, when Europe was invaded, also served in France and Belgium. He had a continued interest in motorcycles throughout his life.

After the war, Lynn returned to Surprise Valley and drove trucks for Standard Oil. In 1949, he married Doris Perry and together they celebrated 58 years of marriage until Doris passed away in 2008. In 1952, Lynn and Doris moved to Alturas, Calif., and together helped build their dream home. He went to work for Modoc County Sheriff Buck Server and became Buck's under-sheriff in 1957. Later, he attended the FBI Academy training in Quantico, Va. In 1962, he became the 15th Modoc County Sheriff, being well respected and running unopposed until his retirement in 1979. He was a founding and charter member of the Modoc County Sheriff's Posse, and during his tenure as sheriff he oversaw the construction of the current Modoc County Jail.

After retiring, Lynn always stayed active whether it was driving truck for various businesses or helping neighbors and friends work cattle. For a time, he had his own small herd of cows and always enjoyed riding his horses. One of his passions was spending time on Devil's Garden cutting wood. He had a wonderful garden that he shared with family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing with his son Tim and especially enjoyed their fishing trip to Alaska for his 80th birthday. When he could no longer drive, he enjoyed afternoon excursions around Modoc County with either his daughter, Joan, or daughter, Cindy, when she was over to visit.

He spent his last years surrounded at home by kids, grandkids and great-grandkids, always enjoying the view out his front window of the Warner Mountains and surrounding landscape.

Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, Sydney and June Harris; his wife, Doris; and his younger brother, Alvin Harris.

He is survived by his daughter, of Cave Junction, Ore.; daughter, of Alturas; son, of Alturas; grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and extended family throughout Modoc County.
