Lucy Lou Howe Snell was born on Nov. 4, 1932 in Kane, Wyo., an unfortunate town that is now under water by the Yellowtail Dam. Her parents were William Louis Howe and Lita Grant. She was the baby of the family with two big sisters and four big brothers: Elsie (Cecil) Snell, Louis Grant (Lora Mae) Howe, Edward Vorris (Pauline) Howe, Lula Belle Howe, Teddy William Howe, and Riley (Bessie) Howe. Mom grew up in Wyoming until her parents moved to Billings. She graduated from Billings Senior High. Her first jobs were with Bell Telephone and she was a meter maid with the city of Billings, a job she was happy to leave behind. She spent 20 years working at various assignments with Midland Bank which later became First Interstate. She was always grateful she could retire before she had to learn to use computers (she and computers never got along).

She met her husband-to-be, Rufus Philip Snell, when her big sister, Elsie, married Rufus’s brother, Cecil. There was always a closeness between the families because of the relationship between the two sisters and the two brothers.

Rufus and Lucy moved out to the then newly growing West end of Billings. They lived there for over 50 years. They were the parents of one boy and three girls: Lynn Snell, Colleen (David) Saxey, Cherie (David) Kavanaugh and Shirley (Jeff) Chandler. We will miss her wit and her tenderness. She was always well dressed and pretty. She’ll be happy we picked her high school graduation picture because she looked like a movie star to us. She is survived by her brother Riley Howe, her brother-in-law Ray Snell and all of her children. She has five grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She has a sweet little great-grandson that she has probably already met for the first time. She always told us to bury her in a pine box; she wanted no fanfare. Family couldn’t give her this wish totally, but we will have only a graveside service per her request and invite any who knew her to come to the Lovell City Cemetery at 10 a.m. (yes, it’s early — the Cemetery closes at noon on Saturday) for her graveside service. Please stay a little while and catch up with family. An informal viewing will be held at the Smith Funeral Chapel on Friday, evening 6-8 p.m. Their address is 925 South 27th Street, Billings, MT.

Lastly, thank you to those relatives and friends who helped us through this unexpected loss and left us with our bellies full, the arrangements easier and our hearts a little less heavy. We know Mom would have been as touched as we have been. Condolences may be shared with the family by visiting Smithfuneralchapels.com.
