The family first lived in Rochester, N.Y., then Pittsburgh, where their daughter, Deborah, was born, and then moved to Skowhegan, Maine. In 1964, the family settled in Houston, where Sara became immersed in community life. She joined the Congregation Beth Yeshurun choir, Hadassah, and became active in and later president of Mary Lechenger Chapter of Women’s American ORT. At age 52, she enrolled at the University of Houston and received her master’s segree in social work. Upon receiving her degree, she began her social work career at DePelchin Children’s Center, where she practiced for many years. Sara then was recruited by Healthy Family Initiatives and, after working there for many years, she retired at the age of 72.
Sara was an intellectual and an avid reader with many interests, including music and politics. She was a devotee of the arts; she was a season ticket holder at the opera and the symphony and enjoyed visiting museums and attending her book club.
Sara loved traveling, having visited more than 30 countries, including China, Thailand and Bali. She was young at heart, full of life and always positive. Sara was a kind, warm, sweet and extremely generous woman, with a great sense of humor and a permanent smile. She had a soft spot for the less fortunate. Above all, she was a devoted and caring mother, grandmother and friend. Sara spoiled her family and friends with love and home-cooked food. Her family was the center of her life, and she was very proud of her children and grandchildren. What made Sara happiest was seeing her family happy.
Sara is survived by her children, Sergio Soroka, M.D., and wife, Claudia; Deborah Soroka and husband, David Koppelman; and her grandchildren, Ryan Soroka and wife, Rima; Melina Soroka and Paul Hussmann.
We will miss her smile, love, affection, devotion and optimism.
Special appreciation goes to her caregivers Sonia Quintanilla, Nubia Argueta and the staff at The Hampton. Special recognition goes to Dr. Roberto Lufschanowski.
