Cora Buchanan-Halsey went home to be with our Lord, Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at the Bowers Hospice House of Beckley, West Virginia. She was loved by her family, neighbors, and friends for 102 and a half years; kept house by herself; making pickles two weeks ago - active and alert until a week ago, going strong.

Cora was born February 4, 1911 in Wyoming County, WV.

She was the daughter of the late Thomas Wetzel Buchanan (1877-1962) & Louisa J. Milam-Buchanan (1889-1975). She loved her family and friends, her favorite pastime was cooking for family and friends. She especially loved spending time with her granddaughters, Tammie and Vanessa and talking to her sister Marie on the phone multiple times of the day.

She is survived by her daughter Barbara Halsey-Hager and her husband Jerry Hager of Pineville, WV; Sandra "Sandy" Halsey-Akers and her husband Bill Akers of Saraland, AL; two granddaughters, Tammie Hager-Melek and her husband Steve of Cross Lanes, WV; Vanessa Hager of Pineville, WV; one sister Marie Buchanan-Stiles of Glen Fork, WV; one brother Jackie Buchanan and wife Linda of Whitesville, WV; Alex Akers whom she considered to be her great grandson, his mother Stephanie Adams of Pineville, WV; numerous nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and great-great nephews; and dear neighbors, Gene, Freda and Jeff Brewer.

In addition to her parents, Cora is preceded in death by her husband, Walter "Cash" Halsey (1917-1976) whom she married on September 13, 1947 in Wyoming, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1947, Page 8, Application Date: September 10, 1947); her first husband, Oza "Clifton" Cook (1901-1944) whom she married on July 12, 1930 in Pineville, Wyoming County, WV (per WV Marriage License Register, Wyoming County, WV, 1930, Page 275, Application Date: July 12, 1930); brothers Emmett Harding (Deceased), Thomas Harding (Deceased), Jack Orton Buchanan (1922-1967) and Howell Buchanan (Deceased), her sisters Sadie Buchanan-Olson (Deceased), Pearl Buchanan-Halsey (Deceased), Ethel F. Buchanan-Johnson (1909-Deceased), Sylvia A. Buchanan-Hurt (1913-Deceased), Eva V. Buchanan-Halsey (1914-2005), Ada Viola Buchanan-Carroll (1916-1997), Ruby Lee Buchanan-Munsey (1918-1945), Lucy Buchanan-Cook (Deceased), and Billie Buchanan-Mathena (Deceased).

Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. to celebrate her life and legacy at Calfee Funeral Service Chapel, Pineville, West Virginia. Services will be conducted by Elder Bryce Phillips and Rev. Keith Reed. Burial will follow at the Halsey-Brooks Family Cemetery at Coon Fork, West Virginia.
