Thomas was the son of Reuben and Lydia (Shaner) Rice. He married Nancy Stubblefield in 1843, and they had 6 children. After his parents passing around 1850, he inherited part of his familys farm, which was known as Old Monarch. His family endured many hardships after his death. His daughter Lydia, tried in vain to keep the family together after the Civil War, but was unsuccessful, and her Uncle Ezekial assisted in raising the younger children.
Thomas is buried in the Rice-Upshaw Cemetery along with his wife and parents. Although no gravestone are to be found.
