The son of Henry & Esther "Hettie" (Broome) Miller, in 1860 he was a living with his farming family in Providence Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted in Lancaster June 29, 1863, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg June 30 as a private with Independent Battery I Pennsylvania Light Artillery, and honorably discharged with the battery January 7, 1864.
2. Enlisted in Lancaster March 31, 1864, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 4 as a private with Co. K, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 5, 1865.

He married Amanda Coble and fathered Benjamin Franklin (b. 02/03/69), George W. (b. 02/13/70), Charles E. (b. 09/01/70, d. 09/21/70), Barbara M. (b. 08/18/72 - married a Hammond), John H. (b. 06/07/73), Emma F. (b. 04/02/75 - married Levi A. Shultz), Ida B. (b. 12/14/76 - married Harry C. Dreher), Cora Ivy (b. 03/25/78 - married Oscar G. Resline), Margie M. (b. 06/??/82), Irene (b. 10/??/84), Minnie E. (b. 04/07/85, d. 08/26/85), Walter (b. 10/17/88), Edgar (b. 06/11/92), and Bertha (b. 08/31/93, d. 03/08/94). An Ancestry.com family tree lists Frederika lnu. as another wife with some of the children shown above born after Amanda then returning to Amanda to father the youngest children. This is unconfirmed.
