James became ill at the age of 13 with rheumatic fever, and was confined to bed. The day that James was told by his doctor that he could get out of bed, but not to exert himself, James, an avid baseball player, got dressed and ran down the family stairs with his baseball glove. At the bottom of the stairs, James fell, and died from a heart attack caused by the damage done to his heart by the illness. He was survived by his three siblings, Julianne,10, Francis,(7)and Leo (4) at the time of James' death.
