Edward William McDowell, 82, died Monday evening at the home of his son, Earl, in this city after a long illness due to age. the final couse of his death was paralysis.
Edward McDowell was one of the pioneer settlers of the Curtis neighborhood, having homesteaded a claim north of Curtis. he and his family came to Oklahoma in 1900.
Edward William McDowell was born in Greenville, Indiana County, Pennsylvania on January 20, 1851 to John and Mary Bard McDowell. The John McDowell family moved from Pennsylvania to Iowa. Edward's mother died in Le Clair, Iowa. After her death John moved the family to Dorchester, Saline County, Nebraska. Edward met Francelia Williams there and they were married in Dorchester, Nebraska in October 1, 1873. Their marriage is recorded in Book 2-Page 68 Saline County, Nebraska. The County Seat is Wilber, Nebraska. Edward and Francelia lived in many different places. Edward worked for a railroad crew building grades and Francelia was the cook for the crew. They lived in Kansas, Golden City, Missouri, back to Kansas, in South Dakota and back to Kansas and Oklahoma. In 1880 they are listed on the U. S. Census in Kansas, Phillips County, Long Island Township here Edward is listed as farmer. Francelia and Frank are also listed on this Census. In 1900 when Francelia's mother died, they lived in Creek Nation Indian Territory, Oklahoma. Edward and Francelia's oldest son Frank, drown in the river near Sulphur, Oklahoma March 17, 1899. Edward and Francelia lived in Oklahoma, Logan County, Spring Creek Township in 1900. They are listed on this Census with Earl and William their other two sons.
The 1910 Census lists them in Oklahoma, Woodward County, Liberty Township and here Edward is farming. Francelia died May 21, 1929 in Mooreland, Oklahoma.
Edward is survived by two sons, Earl of this city, and William, of Enid, Oklahoma.
The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 in the M. E. Church in this city, the pastor, Rev. I. E. Bula, officiating. Interment was made in the Mooreland Cemetery beside the grave of his wife.
