During World War II, he served in the Army's 85th Infantry Division in Italy and attained the rank of major.
In 1946, he received an honorary doctorate in humanities from Suffolk University. He also received an honorary doctorate in divinity from the Jewish Theological Seminary in 1968.
Rabbi Kazis lectured extensively on the philosophy, history and literature of Judaism. His writings have appeared in many publications.
He is survived by his wife Bernice "Sis" (Gondelman); two daughters, Amy Avgar of Jerusalem, and Toby Vogel of Jamaica Plain; a son, Richard of Brookline; and seven grandchildren.
