Ella Gray Wilson Ennis, 90, of Glenaire Retirement Community, Cary, NC died Thursday, February 11, 2016 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh.

Born May 2, 1925 in Sampson Co., she was the daughter of the late George Leon Wilson and Lessie Lee Wilson. Ella Gray, as she was known throughout her life, grew up in the Spivey’s Corner community and graduated from Plain View HS in Sampson Co. and received a BA in grammar school education from UNC-Greensboro (Women’s College). For two years, she taught eighth grade at Dunn HS, where she coached the girls’ basketball team. She earned a MA in physical education at UNC-Chapel Hill and served as Director of Health and Physical Education at Saint Mary’s Junior College in Saint Mary’s City, MD. For several years, she taught health and physical education at Furman University in Greenville, SC. She returned to UNC-Chapel Hill and earned a PhD in physiology and served as a professor of physiology in the School of Medicine, until her retirement.

While a student at UNC-Chapel Hill, she met her late husband, Leon Martin Ennis, Jr., who taught accounting. Following retirement, Ella Gray and Leon cared for her aging, ailing parents at their home in Chapel Hill. After building their dream home, they moved to Dunn, where Leon later died following a lengthy illness. Ella Gray downsized and moved to Glenaire Retirement Community in Cary, where she was involved with family, school, church and community activities. For many years, she served as historian and secretary of the Lee-Johnson reunion, and as historian of the Wilson Clan.

Ella Gray is survived by her “special cousins,” who cared for her throughout her retirement, Carolyn Lee Edwards and J. Whitfield Lee, Jr., of Raleigh, and F. Graham Lee, Sr., of Easton, MD.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Sunday, February 14, 2016 at Cromartie- Miller FH Chapel, Dunn. Visitation will be from 12:30 to 1:30, prior to the service.

Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Glenaire Foundation, 4000 Glenaire Circle, Cary, NC 27511.
