Funeral services for Grace Ness, 92, Spearfish, will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, October 12, 2001, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Spearfish, with Rev. Kent Stillson, officiating. Burial will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery, Spearfish.
Visitation will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 11, 2001, at Fidler Funeral Chapel, Spearfish.
A memorial has been established.
She died Oct. 9, 2001, at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Grace Ness, daughter of Louis and Maggie (Hagemeyer) Ness, was born on March 15, 1909, in Lennox, S.D. She attended school at Harrisburg, S.D., and Worthing, S.D.
On July 12, 1927, she married Oscar Ness, in Canton, S.D. The couple moved to Vienna, S.D., then to Willow Lake, S.D., where she operated a dry cleaning establishment and a creamery for many years. In 1954, they moved to Marion, where Oscar was Chief of Police until his retirement in 1965. Mr. and Mrs. Ness moved to Spearfish and Grace worked at Black Hills State University until her retirement in 1975. After retirement, she worked for Josef Meier for many years.
Grace loved sewing, playing bingo, and traveling to visit her many friends and family members.
Grateful for having shared in Grace's life are three sons, two daughters, two sisters, one brother-in-law, one sister-in-law, 15 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982, parents, one sister Louise, two brothers John and Harry Hagemeyer, one grandson Stan Varner, and one son-in-law Jim Varner.
