John Brown was born on January 27, 1840, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, to Allan and Mary Duncan Brown. He married Margaret Young on June 16, 1865, in Cumbernauld, Dunbartonshire. They had four children Agnes, John, Allan and Peter during their marriage. John and Allan died in infancy. John Brown worked as a type setter and book binder in Glasgow with his brother James Brown who later moved to Jersey City, NJ. John and family visited James and his wife there. He died on June 23, 1905, in Glasgow, Lanarkshire, at the age of 65. His son Peter was present with him.
