Rodney Eugene Mayer, age 82, of Sturgis, MI passed away Wednesday, Feb. 10, 2016 at home surrounded by his loving family.
He was born November 13, 1933 in Bluffton, IN a son to the late Orla and Ina (Kaehr) Mayer.
Rodney moved to Sturgis in the mid 1940's from Bluffton, IN and graduated Sturgis High School with the class of 1951.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during the Korean Conflict.
On June 29, 1957 in Sturgis, MI he married Sharon Mase.
He had been employed at Sturgis Carton and Industrial Supply Company before buying and operating the Home Appliance Center in Sturgis in 1977.
He was a member of the Sturgis Church of the Nazarene and former member of Kiwanis.
He enjoyed sports – especially fast pitch softball, basketball, bowling, golf, and watching the Detroit Tigers. He also enjoyed Country Music, the Grand Ole Opry, singing with his wife in the church choir, and playing the Steel guitar.
Surviving are his wife: Sharon; 1 daughter: Lori (Steve) Hill of Sturgis, MI; 4 sons: Rick Mayer and fiancé: Pamela Dujmovich of Birch Bay, Washington, Kevin Mayer of Sturgis, Dana Mayer and Rob Norton of Sturgis, and Michael (Kristi) Mayer of Johnsburg, IL; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother: Gerald A. Mayer of Sturgis; sister-in-law: Kay Mayer of Sturgis; brother-in-law: Ross (Shirley) Mase of LaGrange, IN; nieces and nephews: Robyn Douglas, Steve Mase, Tammy Diemer, Tonya Finton, Todd Mase, and Gary Reed.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Larry Mayer.
Services celebrating the life of Rodney E. Mayer will be held at 11:00 A.M., Monday, at the funeral home with The Rev. Mark Diemer, 1st Church of the Nazarene, Alexandria, Indiana, officiating.
Interment and graveside service will follow in Oak Lawn Cemetery with full military rites by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Capt. John J. Kelley V.F.W. Post #1355 of Sturgis.
