Richard "Dick" Sheridan
July 1, 1947-February 11, 2016

Dick Sheridan passed away Thursday morning, February 11, 2016.

He was the son of Ney Sheridan (1907-1987) and Margaret Sheridan (1905-2008). His father was teaching at Glover (1946-1948) in Houston County when Dick was born. In 1948, they moved to Grapeland and remained there until Ney was hired at San Augustine in 1952. They moved to Bronson in 1960, when Mr. Sheridan was named Superintendent of the Bronson I.S.D. and then became high school principal at West Sabine, when the Bronson and Pineland schools consolidated in 1961.

Dick was a 1965 graduate of West Sabine High School, where he participated in basketball, baseball, FFA, Beta Club, Physics Club, Annual Staff, Newspaper Staff, Class Officer, and was named "Best All Around" and "Most Friendly."

In 1970, Dick graduated from Stephen F. Austin State University with a bachelor's degree in Health & P.E. and a minor in English.

He honorably served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War.

In 1974-1975, he taught History, Health, Math and P.E. at West Sabine. This was his first teaching job. Dick recently retired after a full career of teaching in public schools in Texas. Dick was a wonderful teacher and a good friend.

A visitation will be held on Monday from 10:30 to 11:30 am on Monday, February 15, 2016 at Downs funeral home in Marshall, Texas. Burial will be follow at Augusta Cemetery in Houston County (near Slocum, TX) at 3:00 PM

A Graveside Service for Richard Sheridan, 68, of Marshall will be held at 3pm, Monday, February 15, 2016 at Augusta Cemetery, Augusta, Texas.

Visitation will be held from 10:30am to 11:30am, Monday, February 15, 2016 at Downs Funeral Home, Marshall.

Mr. Sheridan passed away Thursday, February 11, 2016 in Marshall.

Richard Sheridan was born July 01, 1947 in Augusta, Texas to loving parents, Marshall Ney and Margaret Sheridan.

Richard was a graduate of West Sabine High School, class of 1965. He continued his education receiving a Master’s Degree from Stephen F. Austin State University. His first job out of college was at Union Grove High School (actually West Sabine). He later taught and coached at multiple schools including, Diboll High School, Manor High School and later Cedar Hill High School where he retired. After retiring from teaching, he began working for Marshall Public Library.

Richard was a member of Cypress Valley Bible Church, the Grapeland Masonic Lodge #473, Bronson Eastern Star, Marshall Masonic Lodge #22, the Sharon Shrine Temple in Tyler and served on the Board of Directors of Augusta Cemetery.

Richard Sheridan served his country honorably in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War.

Surviving Richard, his loving wife, Sandra Hodges-Sheridan, of Marshall; daughters, Melissa Peick, of Ft. Worth, Amanda Demarest of Denver, CO, Sherri Sheridan of Plano; step-daughter, Kelli Hearne of Grand Prairie; brother, Bill Sheridan of Longview; sister, Pat Wood of San Augustine; brother, Mike Sheridan of Roanoke, VA; sister-in-law, Patricia Dzurik and husband, Dr. Gerald Dzurik of Shreveport, LA; grandchildren, Azure, Max, Teddy, Bridget, Ashlee Peralez and Weslee Hearne; great-granddaughter, Tessa Peralez. Preceding him in death are his parents.
