Charles Schaffer, 84, of Big Run, died Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2016, at home with his family by his side.

He was born June 25, 1931, in Luthersburg, a son of the late Carl Milford and Alda Fietta (Marshall) Schaffer.

On June 7, 1952, John married the former Betty Lou Yohe. She preceded him in death in 2008.

He worked as a coal miner for P & N Coal Company.

John was a member of the Clearfield Moose and the Sykesville Legion. In his spare time he enjoyed square dancing, painting and fishing.

John is survived by four sons: John, Dean, Homer and Paul Schaffer; and four daughters: Erla Horne, Kandi Schaffer, Deb Shields and Tammy Wilson, all of the Punxsutawney area; seven brothers and three sisters; 17 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren; and his caregiver, Bob Evans.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents; a grandson, Douglas Horne Jr.; a granddaughter, Kayla Schaffer; two brothers and three sisters.

Friends will be received from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 13, 2016, and also from noon to 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at the Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., Big Run, Pa.

A funeral service will held be held at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, 2016, at the funeral home, officiated by Reverend Clifford Voss.

Interment will be at the McClure Cemetery, Big Run, Pa.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Brenda D. Shumaker Funeral Home, Inc., for the funeral expense.
