Carole Jean Schafer, 87, peacefully joined her Heavenly Father on February 8, 2016 at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center, Iowa.

Carole was born on September 18, 1928 to Charles and Pauline (Garmon) McElroy, in Waterloo, Iowa. She graduated from Waterloo West High School in 1946 and attended Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls.

On August 13, 1950, she married Keith Taylor Travis in Waterloo. They lived in several cities before landing in Atlantic, Iowa where their four children were raised.

Carole worked as a Bookkeeper for John Deere in Waterloo, Shelby County Bank in Harlan, and Hawkeye Electric and American Buildings in Atlantic.

On February 27, 1982 Carole married Wayne A. Schafer and moved to his farm in Sherburn, MN. For twenty years she lived and loved the farm life, and gained four amazing step-sons.

Carole is a beloved mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who loved music and was an accomplished pianist. For several years, she volunteered her musical talents at retirement and nursing facilities. She was always an active member of her church and loved sharing the word of God. In her earlier years, she enjoyed swing dancing, yoga, swimming, road hunting and fishing. Some of her favorite hobbies were going to movies, knitting, cross-stitching, gardening, and canning.

She and Wayne loved RV camping and for many years they traveled to Hart Ranch in South Dakota for the summer months and Clerbrook RV Park in Florida for the winter, making many wonderful friends along the way.

Carole was preceded in death by her parents Charles and Pauline McElroy, step-father Tom Empy, first husband Keith T. Travis, second husband Wayne A. Schafer, and niece Laurie Geist.

Carole is survived by her four children, Nancy (Mansco) Perry of Eagan, MN, Sharon Heger of Polk City, IA, Sandy (Steve) Raike of Clive, IA, and Scott (Kellie) Travis of Wildwood, MO; her four step-sons, Larry Schafer of New York, NY, Bryan (Carol) Schafer of St. Paul, MN, Brad (Peggy) Schafer of Mendota Heights, MN, and Lee (Tanya) Schafer of St. Paul, MN; 16 grandchildren, Katherine and Anna Perry, Travis and Olivia Heger, Lauren (Adam) Hodgin and Charlie Raike, Joshua and Jacob Travis, Catherine and Taylor Schafer, Joseph, Ellen, and Caroline Schafer, Madeleine, Lillian, and Julia Schafer; sister, Shirley (Jack) Geist of Waterloo, IA; and nephew, Greg (Lyn) Geist of Oro Valley, AZ.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00am at New Hope Assembly of God Church in Urbandale, Iowa on Saturday, February 20, 2016. Visitation will precede the service on Saturday, from 9:30am – 11:00am. A luncheon will be provided immediately following the service. Carole will be buried in a family plot at the Waterloo Memorial Park in Waterloo, Iowa.

The family extends a special thank you to the staff at Spurgeon Manor in Dallas Center, IA for the excellent care they provided Carole.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Alzheimer's Association in Carole's honor, or St. Jude's Hospital which was one of Carole's favorite charities.
