Dr. Craig Daniel Abernathy, age 54 of Nixa, MO, passed away at his home. on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 after suffering an apparent heart attack.

Born June 7, 1961 in Joplin, he was the son of the late Dan W. Abernathy, Jr. and Helen E. Dragoo Abernathy, and was a 1979 graduate of Parkwood High School in Joplin. He received his bachelor of science degree from M.S.S.U. in Joplin and worked as a Paramedic in Joplin for ten years. Craig received his medical degree from Oklahoma State University and served as an emergency room physician for Ozark Community Hospital in Springfield.

He was devoted to his family and work and was a wonderful husband, father, brother and uncle. He enjoyed fishing, boating and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs fan.

On July 16, 2011 he married Teresa G. Harrison in Las Vegas, NV. She survives.

Additional survivors include a son, Austin Abernathy of Joplin; stepchildren, Tate Harrison and wife Heather of Dallas, TX, Chase Harrison of Ozark, MO, Haley Wiedel and husband Mitchell of Muskogee, OK, Connor Harrison of Nixa; a sister, Carrie Wyler and husband Robert of Joplin; seven grandchildren; two nieces, Shelby VanHoutan and husband Trevor and Shara Wyler.

Memorial services will be held 4:00 p.m. Friday at Parker Mortuary with Pastor Tate Harrison officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the mortuary.
