He was the beloved husband of the late Mary (Smith) Martin and the late Angelina (Fusci) Martin. The oldest of ten children, eight boys and two girls, Gilbert graduated from Van Buren Boys' High School in 1941 where he was a talented athlete who played basketball, baseball and ran track.
Gilbert was a World War II veteran who joined the Army and served his country in the Pacific Theater. He worked for General Motors for forty years and enjoyed painting houses throughout "The Village" until he was eighty. He enjoyed life to the fullest travelling to all corners of the U.S. including Seattle, San Francisco, Arizona, Florida and Canada, just to name a few. Going to casinos and taking cruises were some of his favorite pastimes. Whether you knew him as Mr. Martin, Gilbert, Reds, Dad, Pop or Poppie, he had a special way of making you feel important and loved. He was always very giving and loving with his time and friendship. He made an impression on everyone he met.
