Myron A. "Art" Mitchell
Myron A. "Art" Mitchell, 80, of 413 W. Territorial Road, died Tuesday, Dec. 12, at Veterans Administration Medical Center after a long illness.
A lifelong resident of Battle Creek, he was a graduate of Battle Creek Central and Argubright Business College. He was employed by Grand Truck Western Railroad from 1929-37 and 1939-42. He was a Sheriff Goslin Roofing Co. salesman. After service in the Army Air Force, he worked for the former First Federal Savings and Loan, now Great Lakes Bancorp, for 26 years, retiring in 1973 as a vice president and chief savings officer.
He was a former trustee and usher at First Presbyterian Church. He formerly was a Volunteer Bureau board, Battle Creek United Fund budget committee vice chairman, Battle Creek Chamber of Commerce member, Board treasurer for the former YMCA, local Draft Board secretary, Battle Creek Cereal Festival treasurer, Battle Creek Exchange Club president and Northside Manor Board member. He was a life member of General George A Custer Post 54 American Legion.
A member of the Independant Order of the Oddfellows for over 60 years, he was past state grand master, past grand noble of Ceresco-Columbia Lodge 29, past high priest of the Encampment, past officer of Canton Oriental 19. member of the Columbia Rebekah Lodge 297 and had served on many committees and the board of the Oddfellows and Rebekah Home for the Elderly in Jackson.
He was a life member of Battle Creek Masonic Lodge 12, past worshipful master, life member and high priest of Royal Arch Masons, life member of Zabud Council 9, life member and past commander of Battle Creek Commanders 33, past president of Battle Creek Shrine Club and its mini patrol, and a member of Shrine Club AAONMS of Grand Rapids. He was a life member and past patron of the Eastern Star, past watchman of the Shepherd of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, member of Queen City Court of Amaranth, and a Scottish Rite Valley of Grand Rapids member. He had bowled in three leagues.
Surviving is his wife of 59 years, the former Alfadine E. Cleveland.
Services will be a 2 p.m. Thursday at Farley-Estes Funeral Home. Memorial donations may go to First Presbyterian Church, Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital or the Oddfellow and Rebekah Home for the Elderly.
