Gwendolyn Alegra (Pedwell) Black (1926 - 2016)
Well-known first-grade teacher, retired from Central Elementary in Bloomfield, Mrs. Gwendolyn Alegra Pedwell Black passed away on Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, just two months before her 90th birthday. She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Harry S. Black; parents, Mary Elizabeth Waldner Pedwell and William Frederick Pedwell; brother who died in infancy, William Pedwell Jr.; and great-nephew, William Donald Wayne McCaw. She is survived by her sisters, Mrs. Joan A. McCaw of Ignacio, Colo., and Rosabel A. Lawson and brother-in-law Robert G. Lawson of Farmington; nephews, Paul M. McCaw and wife Terry of Farmington, and Dean W. McCaw of Ignacio; nieces, Marth R. Nelson of Kirtland, Charlotte K. McCune and husband Butch McCune of Flora Vista, and Louise "Sissy" Crawford of Farmington; three nephews; five nieces; four great-nephews; six great-nieces; eight great-great-nephews; one great-great-niece; two great-great-great-nephews; two great-great-great-nieces, and numerous cousins in the Durango, Colo., area and La Plata County origin. Mrs. Black was born April 5, 1926, in Falfa, Colo., and attended primary school at the Orr School on the Florida Mesa, Colo., then secondary school at Durango High School, where she was active in the orchestra and Glee Club, graduating in 1944. She attended Fort Lewis College for two years on a scholarship, then became an emergency teacher during World War II, teaching three years at Allison, Colo., from 1945 to 1948. She married Harry S. Black from Allison on Dec. 19, 1947. Later, they moved to Lakeview, Colo., where she taught for two years, from 1948 to 1950. Mr. Black returned to the military during the Korean conflict and was stationed in Denver. Gwen worked as a telephone operator and supervisor until Harry was honorably discharged, and they returned to the Durango area. Gwen taught in Ignacio Elementary for three years, from 1954 to 1957. At the time, Harry was employed by the El Paso Natural Gas Company, and they moved to Bloomfield, where they continued their careers. Gwen taught first grade at Central Elementary from 1957 until retirement in 1983. The Blacks had resided in Farmington since 1985.
Gwendolyn's family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in her name to the Sacred Heart School, 404 N. Allen Ave, Farmington, NM 87401, or to the Florida Cemetery Association, County Road 222, Durango, CO 81301.
A viewing for Mrs. Black will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, February 11 at the Cope Memorial Chapel of Farmington. A rosary will be recited at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 12, also at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, followed by a Mass at 10 a.m. with celebrant Father Timothy Farrell. Interment will take place in the Florida Cemetery in the Florida Mesa, Colo.
