Clara Wilhelmina Usner Bernius, 53, (the beloved wife of Albert F. Bernius), her daughter-in-law, Alma Braud Bernius, 28, (the beloved wife of Conrad A. Bernius) and her granddaughter, Lura May Bernius, 4, (daughter of Alma & Conrad) were three of five people killed in a fatal car crash while traveling on the Old Spanish Trail near the Chef Menteur Bridge when it is believed that a tire blew and the car flipped over and burst into flames.

At the time of the accident, the group was enroute to Ocean Springs, Miss. for a two week vacation at their summer home.

The other two victims were Mrs. Arbour (Marion LeBlanc Arbour, 33) and her son (Arthur Arbour, Jr., 8) who were taken to Gonzales for interment. Two passengers, members of the Bernius family, survived the accident.
