Biography

Funeral Mass for Robert W. Cooney, 88, who passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016 at home, will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, February 11 at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Indianola with burial in the Indianola I.O.O.F. Cemetery.

Robert served in the United States Navy for 2 years during WWII. He was a Fireman First Class aboard the USS PGM-31 where he worked in the engine room / fire room, and participated in the Bikini Island nuclear tests. Following the service he worked for Armstrong Tire and Hicks Body shop before retiring. He then worked in retirement for Warren County doing lawn care and repair services for the elderly.

Survivors include his children, Marcus, Dennis (Patricia), Patrick (Teresa) Treasa (Jamie) Cooney-Lizotte and Ronnie (Christine); sister, Ruth Schlotterbeck; 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth.

Visitation will be held 4 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, February 10 at Overton Funeral Home in Indianola where family will be present to greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorials may be given in Robert’s name to St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church.
