Virginia Faye Buchanan
1926 ~ 2016
Virginia Faye Buchanan passed away February 6, 2016 after an extended illness. She was born in Heman, Idaho, a small town near St. Anthony, Idaho to James and Inga Pugmire. Virginia's grandmother was from Norway and had pushed a handcart across the Midwest to Salt Lake City. She later married a Norwegian man whose last name was Henrickson. Virginia had three sisters, Rose, Ula, and Ester along with one brother, Floyd. Faye, as her sisters and brother knew her, was the youngest. She went to school in Sugar City and graduated from high school there. She met Merle Ricks at a Flag Day ceremony in Sugar City and they were married in 1941. A daughter, Carla, was born in December of 1942. Merle was drafted into the Army in 1942 and took part in the invasion of Europe where he landed on Omaha Beach during the invasion. Virginia did her part by working at the Mountain Home Air Force Base. Her sister Ester also worked there as the purchasing agent. She also worked part time in town. When the war was over, Merle returned and enrolled in diesel mechanic school in Yakima, Washington where they lived for a year and a half, and then moved back to Boise. David was born March 1950. In 1962, they bought a small house east of Boise near Diversion Dam. Virginia used her dog grooming and boarding money she'd saved to help with the down payment and closing costs. This marriage ended in 1965.
Virginia applied for a professional dog handler's license with the American Kennel Club (AKC) and worked part time as an assistant to a veterinarian in Boise for 2 years. During this time she was showing dogs and earning extra income grooming and boarding dogs. She always loved animals and loved working with dogs. This was her lifelong passion.
In May of 1965, she met Knox Buchanan, a retired Naval Officer, and a professional dog handler. Knox had served during WWII and had been a POW of Japan for three years. They married in 1966 and handled dogs together as their livelihood. James was born March 1968. Knox and Virginia were active with the Idaho Capital City Kennel Club for many years. Virginia was the show chairman for 5 years and Secretary for 8 years. After many years of showing dogs professionally throughout the country, they both applied for judge's licenses with AKC in 1991. Their first dog show judging was in Sacramento, California. They did this together until Knox's death in 1993. After Knox's death, she continued judging until she suffered a stroke and was no longer able to pursue her passion – being a dog show judge.
Virginia is survived by her two sons, David Ricks (spouse Denise Wolverton) who live in Boise, James Buchanan (spouse Melanie Buchanan) who also live in Boise and a daughter, Carla Castronova who lives in Los Angeles. She has eight grandchildren, Matthew Ricks, Daren Wolverton, Dusty Wolverton, Dakota Buchanan, Adrienne Buchanan, Jessica Buchanan, Danny Lindell, and Ana Castronova. She also has three great-grandchildren.
A memorial service and reception with refreshments will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday, February 22, 2016 at Relyea Funeral Chapel, 318 N. Latah Street, Boise.
