John Philip Furbeck, 77, of 415 North Harvey, died Thursday, Jan. 15 at home. The son of Warren and Sophia (Whaples) Furbeck, one of Oak Park's first families, he was educated in Oak Park schools and Chicago Manual high school.
His college education was received at Michigan College of Mines. While there, he participated in glee club activities and because of his outstanding solo work was sent on the road for entertainment purposes. After graduation, his mining career took him to many interesting countries, including Alaska, central America and Spitzbergen.
Mr. Furbeck enlisted in service during World War I and served as a captain in the engineer corps. After retirement, he enjoyed many autumn trips to the New England states where he pursued his favorite hobby, color photography.
He was an active member of the First Church of Christ Scientist, in Oak Park for many years. Survivors include his widow, Maude Kopf Furbeck; two sons, Allen of Wilmington, Delaware; and Warren of Neenah, Wis.; and one daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Clements of Baraga, Mich.
Funeral services were held Sunday at the Postlewait funeral home, under the direction of J. Bruce Carroll, a reader for the First Church of Christ, Scientist. Cremation followed at Acacia Park cemetery on Monday.
