Edna Marie Frerichs, 78, of Eldora, Iowa, died on Friday, February 12, 2010 at her daughter’s home in Clear Lake, Iowa, while surrounded by loved ones and under the care of Hospice of North Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Wednesday, February 17 at the Eldora United Methodist Church with Pastor Richard Boatman officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Garden in Eldora. Visitation is from 6 pm to 8 pm on Tuesday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of North Iowa.

She was born June 8, 1931, in Stoutsville, Missouri, the daughter of Charles and Lillian (Tate) Adams. She grew up in Lentner, Missouri and attended Shelbina High School where she met and later married Glen Butler. The couple had six children and moved to Eldora in 1963 and were later divorced. In 1967 Edna was united in marriage to Ivan Frerichs. The couple had one child together. They remained in Eldora where they raised their family until Ivan’s death in 1996. Edna enjoyed cooking, gardening, dancing, and spending time with family and friends. She attended the Eldora United Methodist Church.

Edna was employed by the Eldora Schools as a cook and later worked for the Iowa State Training School as a cook. In 2007 Edna was united in marriage to Hank Vanderzyden and they enjoyed wintering in Texas together. Edna loved traveling and had fond memories of her trip to Europe as well as traveling across country with family. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Edna was known for her kind heart and giving nature, often she could be seen on her bike delivering homemade goodies to friends and neighbors.

Edna is survived by her husband, Hank Vanderzyden and his family; four sons, Jerry Butler of Marshalltown, John (Linda) Butler of Gifford, Bill (Kathy) Butler of Eldora, and Chris Frerichs of Des Moines; two daughters, Cindy (Bill) Strickland of Kingston, Tennessee and Pam (Steve) Schaller of Clear Lake; two brothers, Leroy Adams of Shelbina, Missouri and Dean Adams of Clever, Missouri; two sisters, Lucille Kyle of Shelbina, Missouri and Eva Lou Bright of Fulton, Missouri; and by twenty-one grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Terry Butler; son-in-law, Rick Collins; sister, Joanne White; and husband, Ivan Frerichs.
