James Anthony Rodgers, 61, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Nov. 27, 1938, to Churchill and Florence Rodgers, Jim (known as Tony in his youth) was raised in Tarrytown, N.Y. He held degrees from Williams College (1960 B.A. geology), Lehigh University (1962 M.S. geology) and from the University of Michigan Law School (1967 J.D.).

Jim practiced law primarily as senior counsel for Exxon Coal and Minerals, a position that led his family and him to move to Houston, Libya, New York and back to Houston. When he retired in 1995, he was general counsel of Advance Elastomer Systems in St. Louis. Jim volunteered for the Literacy Council of St. Louis teaching prisoners to read before moving to Williamsburg in 1998.

He is survived by his wife, Erna Rodgers of Williamsburg; his two sons, Derick Rodgers of San Antonio, Texas, and Jared Rodgers of the Philippines; his daughter, Megan Rodgers of Chicago, Ill.; his twin brother, Timothy Rodgers of Cape Cod, Mass.; his brother, Jack Rodgers of Hot Springs, Ark.; his sister, Louise Anderson of Wellesville, N.Y.; and his two grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be conducted by retired Methodist minister, the Rev. David S. Benedict, at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5, at Nelsen Funeral Home, 3785 Strawberry Plains Road. The family will receive friends immediately following the service until 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home.
