Son of William Woodward and Rebecca (Hooks) Spurlock, migrated with family to Tyler Co. in mid-1850s. Never married.

Enlisted as a 3rd Lt. in Capt. James Gautney Collier's Co. D, 11th Battalion of Texas Volunteers, Nov. 24, 1861, at Sabine Pass, TX. This unit was known as the Tyler County Grays. Served as Captain and Quartermaster under Col. Ashley W. Spaight. Killed in battle at Fordoche Bayou, Fordoche, Pointe Coupee, Parish, LA. Burial site unknown.

Father, mother, brother (Patrick Henry), sisters (Susan and Charlotte) are buried in Beech Creek cemetery. Parent's and Susan's graves are unmarked. Charlotte's grave is marked (Lottie, wife of Rev. D. K. Martin).
