Joanna Veil, a talented musician, was a native of Poland who relocated to Long Island, New York, in August 2001, where she worked as a nanny. Asha was working as a restaurant hostess in New York when she met her husband-to-be and relocated to California in November 2004. The couple married at the Santa Cruz County Courthouse. At the time of her death, Asha worked as a cashier at a grocery store in Ben Lomond, California. She was described as kind, friendly, bubbly, well liked, reliable, and genuinely nice, and was very excited about being a mother. "You Hoo" was her favorite greeting to others. She chose the nickname Asha, an English pronunciation for the Sanskrit word for "hope."

Asha's unborn daughter, who was due in December 2006 and was to be named Anina (for blooming flower), died with her, both victims of murder. Her parents Zbigniew and Teresa and brother Tomek live in Poland, and one of Asha's cousins took her and Anina's ashes to her family in Poland.

One of her co-workers was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for Asha's death, with additional prison time for Anina's death.

There are two brass memorial leafs on the Tree of Life, one for Asha and, one for Anina that were donated by the Santa Cruz Memorial Cemetery by Ocean Street. The big Cemetery.
When you enter the mausoleum and look right you will see a window with The Tree of Life covered in leaves. The Cemetery was generous enough to create and donate the two leaves for the Tree of Life so I had a place to visit since she was cremated and returned home to Poland and there is no grave to visit here. Thank you so very much for your kindness and generosity!
It means a lot to me!
