David Alpher was born in 1868 in Russia, probably in Justingrad (aka Ustingrad and Yustingrad), Kiev (modern day Ukraine), the son of Morton Alpher and Sarah Ostrofsky. Morton and Sarah were born in Spain. David married Rebecca Kaufman, and their eldest child Louis W. Alpher was born in 1889. The family came to the US in May, 1890. David was a blacksmith and a builder in Brooklyn.

David and Rebecca had 6 children. The family lived at 484 Leonard Street in Brooklyn. The family moved about 1922 from Brooklyn to Lynbrook, Long Island. By 1926, the family was living at 23 John Street in Lynbrook.

David died in 1942 in Brooklyn, 3 months after Rebecca's death.
