The Richardson family were United Empire Loyalists who settled in Ontario, Canada. They moved from DeKalb, Illinois to northeastern Nebraska in the fall of 1870, living along Cove Creek, three miles south of Wayne, Nebraska.

In 1856, Mathew B and Rachel Penrose Richardson and family moved to DeKalb, Illinois. Along with a few other families, they arrived in northeastern Nebraska in the fall of 1870.

Rachel was the first ordained minister in the county, and preached a funeral service for a child of the C.E Hunters. She organized the first Sabbath School in the county at LaPorte. Services were held in homes. Onie Arlina (Richardson) Samsel remembered har funeral, with a mile long funeral cortege of horse drawn carriages.
