Louise M. Murphy, age 91, of Flora, Illinois, passed away Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Flora Gardens Care Center.

Louise was born October 21, 1924, the daughter of Ralph and Marie (Hockman) Smith. She was united in marriage to Albert Wayne Murphy during a ceremony at First Christian Church in Flora on May 22, 1948, and they have shared 67 wedding anniversaries together.

Louise was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church where she served for many years as a Sunday school teacher. She was a beautician for over 20 years, first working in the Chicago area and later opening her own business, “Petite Beauty Shop,” after returning to Flora. Her experience allowed Louise to offer the most contemporary hairstyles of the time, and she was among the first in this area to offer beauty services for nails. She and Wayne enjoyed traveling, especially to places like Branson, and she was a frequent reader of novels. Louise loved spending time with her family and grandkids, and memories of family get-togethers at the house are most warmly cherished, as she prepared favorite dishes in the kitchen while Wayne often cooked out on the grill.

She is survived by her husband: Wayne Murphy; three children: Linda (Gary) Schnepper, Roger W. (Naomi) Murphy, and Cheri (Dan) Gill; 7 seven grandchildren: Scott (Shelley) Schnepper, Chad (Sara) Schnepper, Ryan (Sara) Schnepper, Scott Greenwood, Ashley (Chad) Harrell, Jenny (Jamie) Ayers, and Mitch (Misty) Gill; nine great-grandchildren, and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant sister: Helen, and a brother: Edmond “Bud” Hale Smith.

A funeral service for Louise Murphy will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, February 9, 2016, at Frank & Bright Funeral Home in Flora with Randy Murphy officiating.

Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. The family suggests memorial donations be made to support the caring work of Clay County Hospice.
