I wrote this for the Lincoln County Heritage Book:

Hannah was a slave owned by John J. Rawls. She was born in Virginia in 1820, according to the 1880 census of Lincoln County. Just how she came to the John J. Rawls family is a mystery. Some say they bought her and others say she was part of an inheritance. The names of her parents are unknown, lost forever in time. We do know from the 1880 census that they too were born in Virginia.

Hannah was the Rawls family cook, housekeeper and children's nanny. She was known as "Black Mammy".

When the Civil War ended Hannah was freed. She took the Rawls name as her own, stayed with the family, and lived in a log cabin behind the main house. She worked for them as a free woman. She reared and cared for all the Rawls children and several grandchildren. She was a much-loved surrogate mother and was well respected all of her life. After they were grown, she would often scold them if they did not visit her when they were in town visiting kin.

Hannah and Lewis Mullins, a former slave from the Mullins plantation, east of Blanche, were married September 18, 1869. Some folks said that Hannah and Lewis had actually been married for many years. They may have held the ceremony so they could have legal documentation of their marriage, a practice performed by some freed slaves. She and Lewis lived in the small log cabin at Blanche. It is not known if Hannah had any children of her own. Lewis was born in Tennessee and apparently died before 1880.

The date of Hannah's death is not known, but it is though she died around 1900. She is listed on Lincoln County Court Records in 1898. However she can't be found on the 1900 census.

The Rawls family buried her with their family in what was then the Rawls Family Graveyard. They erected a stone with the affectionate inscription "Hannah, Our Old Black Mammy". Many people claim that Hannah didn't know how old she really was, which was quiet common among slaves. Some say that Hannah claimed to be about 100 years old.
