GREENSBORO -- Leonard Holmes Jr., 61, died Saturday at Moses H. Cone Hospital, Greensboro. He was a native of Snow Hill, attended Greene County Public Schools, earned bachelor's and master's degrees from N.C. A&T State University, served in the U.S. Army and was employed as a teacher by Randolph County Public Schools for 32 years.

Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at St. John United Holy Church, Snow Hill, with the Rev. Michael Artis officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Mill Cemetery.

He is survived by mother, Adlene Thompson Holmes; four brothers, Mahlon and Anthony Holmes, both of Greensboro, Dwight Holmes of Goldsboro, Jimmy Holmes Sr. of Indianapolis, Ind.; three sisters, Alice Purdue of Columbia, Md., Phyllis Devereaux of Oxen Hill, Md., and Cynthia Sawyer of Goldsboro.

He was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Holmes Sr.; brother, Elijah Ray Holmes; and sisters, Diane Holmes and Shirley Coleman.

Visitation will be today at McIntyre Funeral Home, 900 S.George St., from 2 to 6 p.m.
