Arthur Gail Jamison of Blackfoot, Idaho passed away Friday, February 5, 2016 at his home. He was 90 years old.
Art was born May 28, 1925 in Burley, Idaho to Wallace Crawford Jamison and Susie Almeda Fairchild. The family later moved to Pocatello.
At the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific Theater during WWII as a member of the Acorn Group, and advanced airfield assembly unit. He served on the USS Pocomoke, USS Fillmore and the USS Southerland. When prodded about his time on Tarawa, he said, “I spent most of the time hiding under my helmet. I hated that damn place.” Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Idaho.
Art met Nola Stewart at the Blackfoot Skating Rink. They soon became sweethearts and were married on October 30, 1945 in Oakland, CA. They lived in Pocatello, where they began their family of four sons, eventually settling in Blackfoot. Nola passed away in 1991. In 1994, he married Shirley Carpenter, who passed away in 2004.
In his youth, Art worked as a sausage stuffer and a hearing oil delivery man before beginning his long career as a commercial flooring installer. He was a partner in G & W Floors, eventually selling out and starting his own company, Blackfoot Linoleum & Tile in the building that would later house Just’s Army Store and is now the library. For the next 61 years he owned and operated Commercial Floors. His sons and grandson followed in his footsteps. There are floors from LaBarge, Wyoming to Nampa, North Fork, ID to Ogden, UT, and all points in between, that were expertly installed by Art and his “guys.”
Art enjoyed going fishing with his good friends, Chet Goodwin and Sam Cucchiara, hanging out at The Bait Shop and reading the paper. He was a member of the Elk’s Club.
Art is survived by his sons, Eddy (Connie), Kevin (Valerie) of Blackfoot and Robert (Noriko) of Redwood City, CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Amy (Brady) Brower, Matthew (Susanne), Michelle (Jim) Krager and Katharine; great grandchildren, Madeline, Stella, Henry, Elliot and Anna. He is also survived by his little sisters, Faye LaRay (Jim) Correll and Veloy (Ron) Fullmer.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Nola, wife Shirley, his eldest son, Michael Jamison and his brothers, Cliff, Wayne, Harold and Wally.
According to his wishes there will be no official services. A private family celebration of his life will be held at the family’s beloved place near Mackay this summer.
