Dale R. Carter, Sr. 74 of Sharpsburg, GA passed away on Saturday, January 30, 2016 at his home.

He was born June 28, 1941 in Ft. Olgethorpe, GA to the late Annie Belle (Moore) Carter and Walter W. Carter of Rossville, GA.

Johnny grew up in Rossville, GA where he met and married his wife of 59 years, Peggy A. (McCroskey) Carter.

Johnny joined the U.S. Army at the age of 19, achieving the rank of Command Sergeant Major and proudly served his country for the next 26 years including two tours in Vietnam where he was awarded The Bronze Star Medal twice. Johnny, Peggy and their two children, Penny (Farbo) and Dale Jr. traveled the world and enjoyed many wonderful times together.

After retiring from the Army, Johnny went to work for the U.S. Civil Service for 10 years. He moved to Sharpsburg in 1999 where he worked for Charter Communications. He was affectionately known as 'Sheriff Johnny' until he retired from there in 2006. He also worked for Manheim Auction for six years until he resigned in 2012.

Johnny loved fishing, woodworking, antiquing, collecting and spending time with family and friends. He had a fun loving, adventurous spirit and a smile that would light up a room. He enjoyed teaching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in his own special 'Papaw' way spending quality time with them and delighting them with his toys and puzzles. Johnny was a member of the Turin Lodge #337 and the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Ann (McCroskey) Carter of Sharpsburg; daughter, Penny M. Farbo (Michael) of Newnan; son, Dale R. Carter, Jr. (Sherry) of Navarre, FL; five grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sisters, Cathy (Kenneth) Warren of Soddy Daisey, TN; Brucetta (David) Johnston of Davenport, FL; brother, Michael (Barbie) Curd of Rossville, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and many wonderful friends that loved him dearly.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of McKoon Funeral Home 38 Jackson St. Newnan, GA with Rev. Ken Rose officiating. Burial will follow at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, GA with full military honors at 1:30 p.m. Visitation will be Wednesday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at McKoon Funeral Home.
