US Astronaut. He held the distinction as being the sixth person to walk on the moon. After attaining his Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Management from Carnegie Institute of Technology, he received his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Engineering from the United States Naval Postgraduate School. He later earned his Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics/Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Commissioned an ensign with the United States Navy in 1952, he served various assignments prior to his selection to NASA in 1966. Mitchell served as Luna Module pilot for Apollo 14 in 1971 and along with Alan Shepard, he totaled 33 hours on the moon's surface. After retiring from NASA and the Navy, he founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences and penned numerous books including "The Way of the Explorer" (1996).
