She was born November 19, 1918 in Okmulgee County to Charles K. and Edith (Kelley) McLeoud (McLeod). She enjoyed being the baby daughter. Hazel met the one she loved, Clayton McDaniel, while at East Central University in Ada. There she received her degree in education with a life time teaching certificate. She went on to receive her Master's degree from OU in 1980. Hazel taught at South Rock Creek School for 17 years and volunteered in the library. Hazel loved to read, her last book being by Rick Braggs, My Southern Journal. She was also working on memorizing Psalm 119, and had gotten to verse 129. She was active in Kiwanis, holding various offices over the years. She was dedicated to the summer reading program, which gave 3 books to every Kindergartener in Shawnee. She enjoyed belonging to the AARP. She was the recipient of the 2015 Andrus Award for Community Service. Hazel worked with the 4-H Club, Shawnee Mission Food Bank, Retired Educator's Association, Mission Hill Food Bank, and was a reading tutor. Hazel loved her church, Rock Creek Baptist, where she served in numerous positions as well as teaching her ladies Sunday School Class. She also loved to travel with family and friends, having visited Alaska, Nova Scotia, Israel, Spain, England, Scotland, Singapore, Old Mexico, and many states.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Auvergne McLeoud (McLeod) Benson and Mary McLeoud (McLeod) James.
She is survived by her children, Nancy Hendrix of Pineville, LA, Beth and Richard McDonald of Peidmont, OK, Kelley and RaDonna McDaniel of Blanchard, OK, and Kenney McDaniel of Bellvue, NE; granddaughters, Emily Murrow, Shawnee McDaniel, and Kelsey McDaniel; grandsons, Josh Hendrix, Evan Hendrix, Josh McDonald, Russell Murrow, Charles McDaniel, Lt. K.C. Nassau McDaniel, TSGT Ryan McDaniel, and Lt. Brendan Dax McDaniel; numerous great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; as well as many other family members and friends.
A Celebration of Hazel's Life will be 2pm Wednesday, February 10, 2016 at Rock Creek Baptist Church with Brother Danny Napier officiating. Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Park.
