Born Wouter Jan Elings in Dodewaard, the son of Gerrit Elings and Jantje Duleman. On 6 May 1870 he married Geeritje Haaboom (7 April 1843 - aft 1900) in Waginingen, Gelderland. They arrived in New York on 17 June 1872 aboard the Parthia.

He and Geeritje had 7 known children together:

Gertrude (1883-1967) m. Harry Peterson
Albert (1884-?)

Geeritje passed away between 1900-1904. Walter married Jannigje "Jennie" (Vogelaar) Koopman on 25 Dec 1905 in Des Moines, Polk, Iowa.
