Captain F. C. Duncan, commander of Ferris Post, G.A.R., a retried sea captain and utility operator, died here early Saturday morning. Frederic Chandler Duncan, son of Charles C. and Mrs. Hannah Tibbetts Duncan, was born at Bath, Maine, on the 23rd day of March, 1847. Captain Duncan first went to sea when an infant aboard his father's ship and in all forty years of his life were spent on blue water. At the early age of eighteen he was an officer in the U.S. Navy in Admiral Farragut's squadron and was mentioned in dispatches by his captain for bravery in action. He also served in the transport service during the remainder of the Civil War. His first command was the merchant sailing vessel "Kate Davenport" when he was twenty-one which he held until he left the sea for a time in 1873 and spent twelve years in the office of his father who was shipping commissioner of the port of New York. It was during this time on shore that the captain was married to Miss Kate Belcher of Brooklyn, New York. In 1885 he returned to the sea life and commanded the ship "Florence" for fourteen years. His family always accompanied him and the two youngest sons were born on shipboard. The "Florence" sailed to England, Ireland, Australia, the Philippines, Java, and ports in North and South America. In 1898 the "Florence" was sold in San Francisco and her captain retired from the sea. He went into the public utility business, first in Galesburg for eight years and then for nineteen years in Princeton where he was manager of the Princeton Gas Company. He is survived by his wife and five children, three sons: Otis B., of Chicago: Frederic B., of Oak Park, and Charles C., of Royal Oak, Michigan, and two daughters, Miss Alice Duncan and Mrs. Kate Duncan Bryant, both of Princeton and eight grandchildren. Also a brother, Henry E. Duncan, of White Plains, N.Y. and two half sisters, Mrs. Elsie Duncan Yale and Mrs. John L. Manning, of Philadelphia.
