A graduate of Washington University, St. Louis, LL.B 1882. He sang with the 1880 Glee Club and was president of the University Baseball Club. He took as his wife Miss Sarah Hitchcock, 18 May 1893. She was the daughter of Ethan Allen Hitchcock and Margaret Wright Collier Hitchcock. Mr. Hitchcock served as Secretary of the Interior under Presidents William McKinley and Theodore Roosevelt.

He was admitted to the Missouri Bar and practiced law in St. Louis with the firm of Lionberger & Shepley, 1886-1896. In 1901 he joined Union Trust Company of St. Louis as a vice-president. In January of 1902 he became president and remained until April of that year when the firm joined with the St. Louis Trust Company to become the St. Louis Union Trust Company. He was vice-president of this company until 1916 when he became president. In 1923 he became chairman of the board and served until 1929.

During this time he served as a director of Bridge & Beach Manufacturing Co, 1902-1929; Graham Paper Co. 1904-1930; Houston Oil Company of Texas, 1909-1930; Hamilton-Brown Shoe Company, 1915-1929; First National Bank in St. Louis 1919-1930; Evens & Howard Fire Brick Company, 1927-1930. He was a trustee of Missouri Botanical Gardens from 1901-1930.

He died at his home, 4943 Pershing, in St. Louis.
