Sam Green, Jr., the son of the late Sam, Sr. and Corine Thompson Green, was born on December 24, 1922 in Honey Hill, South Carolina. Rosa, his sister, said it was after midnight, so he took advantage of that fact and gladly celebrated on both days with birthday and Christmas gifts under the Christmas tree.

Sam was educated in the Berkeley County School District. After enlisting in the Untied States Army in 1943, Private First Class Sam Green served as a longshoreman in the 263 Port Company until 1946. He earned the EAME Service Medal with one bronze service star, good conduct medal and World War II Victory Medal. By trade, he was a carpenter. During his five decades of employment, he was a pulpwood truck driver in Berkeley County, SC; assembly worker at Avco Corporation, North Charleston, SC; and brick mason at Georgetown Steel Mill, Georgetown, SC. He retired on January 1, 1988 from Georgetown Steel Mill after sixteen years of service.

The inspiration of a dedicated Christian home and family led to Sam's commitment to family and his strong Christian foundation. He was a lifelong member of Wesley A.M.E. Church, Shulerville, SC where he accepted Christ at an early age and attended Sunday School. Sam was Leader of Class #6, Chairman Pro Tem of the Trustee Board, and Chairman of the Building Committee. The present church building was constructed under his guidance. Also, in 2001, he was elected the church’s Father-of-the-Year. Upon his death, Sam was the oldest male member of the church.

On June 11, 1949, he married the love of his life and ultimately his best friend, the late Rosa Lee Palmer. This fifty year union was blessed with eight children, three preceded him in death: Baby Rosa Lee (1960), Terry Lee (1971) and Sharon Maybank (1986). After the death of Sharon, Sam and Rosa Lee became legal guardians to her children, Sharice and Terrell Maybank. In 2000, God dispatched His angels to take Terrell home.

Sam Green had three passions: fishing, gardening and hunting. Even in his declining health, he enjoyed all three. Whether driving his Ford pick-up truck to the back fields, fishing in a creek in the woods or hearing a dog tree a coon on a crisp winter night, Sam enjoyed his 91 years to the fullest. He was a member of the Shulerville Hunting Club and was treasurer of the Green Family Reunion for many years. Sam built his house on the side of the road with a foundation rooted in Christian values, grounded in family values and fortified by LOVE; a love so abundant it made one gladly honor him with the titles of Daddy, Granddaddy, Poppie, Sambo, Brother, Uncle Sam, King, Cousin Sam and Friend. No matter how deeply we wanted him to stay, on Friday, January 10, 2014, Sam had to answer to his name. Surrounded by everlasting love and peace, he boldly marched from earth to glory to receive his golden wings.

Cherished memories will forever be treasured by his loving daughters: Regina R. and Lynne M. Green of Shulerville, SC, Marilyn (Louis, Sr.) Manigault and Anita (William, Jr.) Bowell of Baltimore, MD, and Valerie (Rev. J. Michael) Johnson of Easley, SC; seven grandchildren: DeVette, Louis, Jr., Sharice (Patrick), Samantha (Kenyon), Marcus, Lakeesha and Brittani (Bryan); one grand-pup, Laila Johnson; twelve great-grandchildren; two sisters: Oneada Manigault and Geneva Manigault, of Baltimore, MD; three brothers: Logan (Delores) Green and Irvin (Daisy) Green of Baltimore, MD and Wilton Green, Sr. of Shulerville, SC; two aunts-in-law: Dorothy Goldson of Philadelphia, PA and Mary Thomas of Baltimore, MD; one brother-in-law: John Furman Palmer; one sister-in-law: Earline Palmer King, one godson: Clifford Padgett; a host of FA-VO-RITE nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
