Mary Ellen Battani of Woodward, Iowa passed away August 30, 2019, at the age of 87 years old. Mary was born to parents Jimmie and Carson Whitfield. She was the second eldest of seven siblings and attended school in Red Bay, Alabama.

In 1953, she met and married James Lee Battani. Mary and Lee lived in Woodward, Iowa and operated Battani Furniture Store for 20 years. After closing the furniture store, she worked at Sportsman Park in Dawson, Iowa as a groundskeeper. She then went to work at the Woodward Resource Center until she retired after 17 years. After Battani Carwash was built, Mary operated that.

Mary enjoyed sewing and crocheting. She always had a large vegetable garden and canned the vegetables that she grew. Mary’s biggest passion was the very large flower beds in her backyard. People came to see her flowers and Mary loved sharing starts with them. Always welcoming, she always took the time to talk to anyone who stopped.

Mary was preceded in death by husband Lee; daughter Gina Lands; parents Jimmie and Carson Whitfield; sisters Betty Dexter and Elaine Whitfield; brothers James Whitfield, Wayne Whitfield, and Johnny Whitfield.

Per Mary’s wishes, a private burial will take place at a later date.
