Obituary: Leader-Harold Oct 25, 1979

Lewis Clark Camp, life long resident of Platteville, died Saturday, Oct 13 at Eventide of Greeley. He was 97. He was born Nov. 28, 1881, to John and Mary Camp on a farm eight miles south of Platteville. L. C. began helping on the farm by milking cows and driving the plow teams at an early age. The lifelong Platteville resident attended St. Vrain school in County District 6. His family later moved to Platteville. In 1893, Camps's father built a home for the family. While L. C. attended school in Platteville he carried in the coal, swept and dusted for $2.50 a room. After finishing school Camp worked for Charley Vollmar's Creamery and hauled milk for CO. Condensed Milk after Vollmars sold out. On June 28, 1905 Camp married Lucy Egner, who lived across the river from him where the Norgens now farm. In his first year of marriage, Camp took up farming but abandoned the work after a hail wiped out his crops. Camp went to work in the Springfield General Store. He also bailed hay for several years from Twin Bridges to Fort Lupton. Camp helped haul gravel used to build Milton Reservoir in 1911. When he quit hauling milk, he bought a farm east of Platteville and began his own dairy. After five years he sold his dairy business, but kept the feed cattle. Land Camp had bought in 1932 is still owned by the family. Camp retired in 1962 at age 81, he turned the farm, with its 600 head of cattle over to his sons. He and his wife spent most of their time after his retirement traveling. Camp was active in community government and served as the Town's Mayor for 16 years. He had served on the Town Board for all but one or two terms over a 38 year period. Survivors are a daughter Mrs. Louise C. Robb San Antonio TX. four sons, Lloyd E. and Melvin J., of Platteville, John W. of Long Beach CA, Harold D. of Fort Morgan: 10 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Camp died in 1973 and a daughter Mary Mitchell is deceased. Recitation of the Rosary was held Wednesday, Oct. 17 and Mass of the Christian Burial held Thursday at St. Nicholas Catholic Church at Platteville. Interment was at Mizpah Cemetery.
