Michael D. Land Sr., 69, passed away Monday, Jan. 18, 2016, in his home in Nineveh after a lengthy illness. Born June 18, 1946, in Kokomo, he was the son of Edna L. (Holt) and Floyd R. Land.
He served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970, including one tour in Vietnam. He also served in the Army Reserve, and was honorably discharged on June 1, 1974. He retired from General Motors Corp., after 27 years of service on Sept. 1, 2000, from Local 95 in Janesville, Wisconsin.
He enjoyed fishing, taking long drives, sports, music and having a good time with family and friends. He was involved in the Howard County Vietnam Veterans Grounds and was very proud to serve his country.
Survivors include the love of his life, Connie A. Land, Plainfield; two sons, Michael D. Land Jr. and Kenneth E. Land (Gina McDonald), Kokomo; his daughter and son-in-law, Melissa A. (Land) and Jon M. Gedek, Plainfield; two sisters, Sandra A. Wisher, Greentown, and Linda S. Duke, Kokomo; his brother, Jimmy E. Land, Dunedin, Florida; grandchildren, Jessica L. Land (Kole McWhirt), Desarae N. Gedek, Deacon M. Gedek and Dylan S. Gedek; great-grandchild, Piper BrookeLee McWhirt; nieces and nephews, Bambi Pullen, Kevin Wisher, Keith Wisher, Kelli (Wisher) Elkins, Jennifer Duke, Jimmy Joe Land, Kyle Land, Amber (Land) Clary and Angie Land.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, E. Lorraine Rollins; and brother, Robert A. Land.
Although his suffering is finally over, he will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
A private gathering for family will be on a future date at the Marion National Cemetery. Celebration of life with military rites will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 6, 2016, at the Howard County Vietnam Veterans Grounds, 8313 E. 400 South, Greentown. Chaplain Dennis "Chappy" Chapman will be officiating.
The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the Howard County Vietnam Veterans for their generosity.
Memorials may be made to a veterans organization of your choice.
