Yvonne was born Yvonne Clausen on July 23, 1930 in Selma, CA, the middle child and only daughter of Gerhard and Ida Clausen. She graduated from Selma High School in 1948, where she played in the band and excelled at athletics.
After high school, she worked various jobs while pursuing her athletic dreams by playing with the Fresno Rockets softball team. She played centerfield and had the nickname "Citation" for her speed. She and her teammates toured the country. The team won three national championships in the years that she played with them and was later inducted into the Fresno Sports Hall of Fame. She was also inducted individually into the Selma Sports Hall of Fame for her accomplishments.
She met her future husband Harold Andersen when he attended a Rockets game. They were introduced by Al Radka, the Rockets' announcer who went on to be a Fresno TV and radio personality. They married in 1954 and had two children, Cheryl and Brian. The year between the births of their two children was the last season that she played with the Rockets, serving as a substitute while the team won another national championship.
After the birth of Brian, Yvonne started working at a company that eventually became Peabody Floway Pump Company. She worked there for many years, doing billing and arranging shipping for international customers as far away as Abu Dhabi.
Yvonne and Harold were avid sports fans. At least once a year, they took the family to see their beloved San Francisco Giants play in the friendly confines of Candlestick Park, where they taught their children the moral responsibility of not leaving before the game ended. They were also avid Fresno State sports fans, for many years attending every home and a few away football, basketball, and softball games. They also enjoyed travelling, including a special trip to visit relatives in Denmark. After Harold passed away in 2003, Yvonne continued to attend Fresno State softball games and gatherings, where she enjoyed telling stories of her softball playing days.
She and Harold were long-time members of Bethel Lutheran Church in Fresno. They loved the community and served the church in many capacities.
She was a dedicated collector of spoons and displayed her large collection in her home. Her collection benefited from the kindness of friends and family, who brought her spoons from around the world.
She is survived by her step-son Mike Andersen, her daughter Cheryl Michaels, her son Brian Andersen and his wife Michelle Jolly, her grandson Erik Andersen, her younger brother Gaylen Clausen, and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Yvonne to Bethel Lutheran Church (187 N. Broadway St., Fresno, CA 93701) or in support of the Fresno State University Softball program (P.O. Box 26267, Fresno, CA 93729. Send checks to the Bulldog Foundation and indicate Diamond Club, in memory of Yvonne Andersen in the memo line).
