Professional Football Player. For nine seasons (1952 to 1958 and 1960 to 1961), he played at the defensive tackle, tackle and defensive end positions in the National and American Football Leagues with the Chicago Cardinals, Washington Redskins, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers and Oakland Raiders. Born Volney Monroe Peters, he was raised in San Diego where he attended Herbert Hoover High School and played collegiate football at the University of Southern California. While with the Trojans, he set a team record for minutes played. Selected by the Cardinals during the 13th round of the 1951 NFL Draft, the beginning of his professional career was delayed while he served with the United States Military during the Korean War. He totaled 104 career regular season games and in 1955, he distinguished himself when he achieved Pro-Bowl honors. Peters held the distinction as being on the inaugural roster of the Chargers during the first season of the newly-formed American Football League. After retiring from football, he worked in the construction industry. He was inducted into the Breitbard San Diego Hall of Fame in 2008.
